Below you will find a description of research projects done by past RISE Interns.  For more information please feel free to contact the intern and/or mentor directly.

RISE 2003 Interns

Leonette Cox is a senior chemistry major at Morgan State University.  In the summer of 2003 she worked with Dr. Robyn Hannigan.  Leonette's research focused on identifying stream water components using a combination of hydrochemical measurements and statistical modeling.  Her research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Science in October 2003 and will be submitted for publication in the Journal of Hydrology in winter 2003. 

Leonette is now a PhD student in Environmental Sciences at Arkansas State University.

Where is Leo Now?
She completed her MS in Chemistry at Arkansas State University in Aug 2006 and is in her third year of her PhD in Environmental Science at Arkansas State University.

Cedric Kidd is a junior computer science major at Jackson State University.  In the summer of 2003 he worked with Dr. Roger Buchanan.  Cedric's research involved the integration of a computer system with electovoltometry to record brain wave patterns from rats exposed to nicotine.  Brain function is altered when rats are exposed to high doses of nicotine and changes in brain waves, as recorded by Cedric's system, allows biomedical researchers to record minute changes in the P13 arousal response.

Where is Cedric Now?
Cedric completed his BS in Computer Science at Jackson State University in 2004.  He is working in the computer industry in MS and is currently applying to graduate programs.

Ashley Davis is a senior biology major at Jackson State University.  In the summer of 2003 she worked with Dr. Anne Grippo.  Ashley's research explored the uptake of phytoestrogens by ewe (female sheep).  During the course of this research Ashley had to perform surgery canulating ewe oviducts and measuring, by HPLC, the phytoestrogen content of these fluids.  The results of her research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Science in October 2003.

Crystal Coleman is a junior at Mississippi University for Women and is majoring in Biology.  In the summer of 2003 she worked with Drs. Hannigan and Farris.  Crystal's research explored the chemical weathering of black shales and the release of metals into solution during experimental batch weathering.  The results of her research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Science in October 2003.

Crystal is completing her Air National Guard tour in Iraq as a science specialist.

Stacy Beharry is a junior biology major at Morgan State University.  In the summer of 2003 Stacy worked with Dr. Stan Trauth.  Her research examined a mimicry complex between a newt and leech.  The newt is toxic and so is an undesirable prey item, the leech is not toxic but mimics the coloration and swimming behavior of the newt.  The results of her research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Science in October 2003.

Where is Stacy now?
Stacy completed her BS in Biology and graduated as class Valedictorian from Morgan State University in 2005.  She is now entering the second year of her PhD studies in Mathematical Ecology at Old Dominion University.

Therother "Dee" Clinton is a senior chemistry major at Arkansas State University.  In the summer of 2003 Dee worked with Dr. Hannigan.  Dee's research combined traditional African American remedies and chemistry to explore the metal chemistry of chewing tobacco.  Chewing tobacco is used by many in the Delta African American community as a salve for treating skin rashes and is also used as a food additive.  

Dee is completing her BS in chemistry and will work in the chemical sales field.

Where is Dee now?
Dee graduated with her BA in Chemistry from Arkansas State University in 2005.  She is currently working in the chemical industry.

Nichelle Harriott is a senior chemistry major at Morgan State University.  In the summer of 2003 Nichelle worked with Dr. Farris.  Nichelle's research explored the linkages between macrophyte communities in agricultural ditches and the retention of pesticides in these systems.  The results of her research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Science in October 2003.

Nichelle is applying to graduate programs in ecotoxicology and is currently employed by the Maryland Dept of Environmental Protection

Nichelle is working towards her MS in Environmental Science and Policy at George Mason University

Jason Jimmar is a senior sociology major at Arkansas State University.  In the summer of 2003 Jason worked with Dr. Hannigan and PhD candidate Nate Bickford.  Jason's research focused on the equilibrium speciation of metals in freshwater systems using a computer model, PHREEQC.

Jason is a first semester law student studying environmental law and policy at the University of Memphis

Where is Jason now?
Jason is completing his MBA at UT San Antonio

Youa Yang is a junior geology major at Macalester College.  In the summer of 2003 she worked with Dr. Hannigan.  Youa used laser ablation ICP-MS to analyze mineral inclusions in a series of Ordovician volcanic ashes.The results of her research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Science in October 2003.

Where is Youa now?
Youa completed her MS in Hydrogeology at Temple University in 2006 and is currently seeking a position in hydrogeology and consulting.

Jerome Stegall is a senior chemistry major at Arkansas State University.  In the summer of 2003 Jerome worked with Dr. Jon Russ.  Jerome's research explored the oxalate chemistry of coatings on prehistoric rock art.

RISE 2004 Interns

  Anh Nguyen is a junior chemistry major at the University of Texas - Dallas.  In the summer of 2004 Anh worked in the Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory with Dr. Reeve.  Her research focused on the ro-vibrational characteristics of compounds in tobacco smoke using FTIR and laser spectroscopy.

Where is Anh now?
Anh completed her BS in Chemistry at UT Dallas in 2005. After teaching in Irving TX for a year she starts her MD at UT Southwester Medical School in Fall 2006.

Modupe Braithwaite is a sophomore biology major at Florida Memorial College.  In the summer of 2004 Modupe worked in the Water-Rock-Life Laboratory with Drs. Grippo and Hannigan.  Modupe's research assessed metal fractionation in ram sperm and blood using ICP-MS.

Dupe will complete her BS in Biology at Florida Memorial College in May 2007

  Stacy Beharry is a junior biology major at Morgan State University.  In the summer of 2004 Stacy worked with Dr. Tom Risch.  Stacy's research explored the effect of parasites on bluebird health, specifically assessing changes in feather coloration with age and presence of parasites.

Where is Stacy now?
Stacy completed her BS in Biology and graduated as class Valedictorian from Morgan State University in 2005.  She is now entering the second year of her PhD studies in Mathematical Ecology at Old Dominion University.

  Johnathan "JS" Woodward is a sophomore biology major at Middlebury College.  In the summer of

 2004 JS worked with Dr. Al Romero.  JS's research explored the behavior of fish, specifically changes in light wavelength and the linkages of these changes to evolutionary strategies in blind cave fish.

  Reinique Mousseaux is a senior environmental science major at Oglala Lakota College.  In the summer of 2004 Reinique worked with Dr. Patrick Stewart. Reinique's research focused on evaluating Native American food and land ethics, particularly as they pertain to genetic modified organisms.

  Amy Shipley is a junior biology major at the University of Toledo.  In the summer of 2004 she worked with Dr. Jim Bednarz.  Amy's research focused on bird ecology and health and the impact of pesticides on reproductive success.

Where is Amy now?
Amy completed her BS in Biology in 2005 and is currently an intern at Archbold Biological Station in central Florida.  She will begin graduate study in Fall 2007.

  Michael Balfour is a senior chemistry major at Morgan State University. In the summer of 2004 he worked with Dr. Roger Buchanan.  Michael's research focused on the impact of pesticides on brain function, specifically changes in the startle response with exposure.

Where is Mike now?
Mike completed his BS in Biology at Morgan State University in 2005 and is currently a Dental student at Howard University.

Emy Laija is a junior environmental science major at the University of Texas at El Paso.  In the summer of 2004 she worked with Dr. Farris.  Emy's research assessed the remediation of a contaminated site (chrome) and the changes in soil and water quality since the initiation of remediation.

Emy completed her BS in Environmental Science at UTEP in 2005.  She starts her graduate students at UNLV in Fall 2006.

Michelle Trevino is a senior biology major at Arkansas State University.  In the summer of 2004 she worked with Dr. Ron Johnson.  Michelle's research focused on the population genetics of the endangered Yellowcheek darter.

Michelle completed her BS in Biology at ASU in 2004.  She is currently a graduate student at the University of Arkansas Medical School.

RISE 2005 Interns

Kyle Schumann is a sophomore biology major at the University of Alaska-
Fairbanks.  In the summer of 2005 he worked with Dr. Steve Coghlan.  
His research focused on metals in aquatic insects and using the relative 
abundance of metals in insect skeletons and water chemistry to identify habitat.

Kyle is in his senior year at the University of Alaska.
 
Bridgette Harris is a senior chemistry major at the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff.  
In the summer of 2005 she worked with Dr. Roger Buchanan. Her research focused 
on assessing the impact of aerosol pesticide exposure on small mammal brain function.

Bridgette completed her BS in Chemistry at UAPB in 2005.  She is currently a 
high school chemistry teacher in Memphis TN			
Morgan Presley is a senior biology major at Lyon College.  In the summer of 2005 
she worked with Dr. Jim Bednarz. Morgan studied the distribution of bird abnormalities and 
the relation between these abnormalities and blood levels of acetocholinerterase inhibitors.

Where is Morgan now?
Morgan completed her BS in 2005 and is currently a graduate student at 
Missouri State University
Edna Poku is a senior biology major at Morgan State University.  In the summer of 2
005 she worked with Drs. Chai and Hannigan. The title of Edna's project was "Speciation 
of Organotin by HPLC-ICP-MS"

Edna is completed her BS in Biology at Morgan State University in 2006.  She is currently
applying to MD-PhD programs.

 

Bernadette Guerra is a senior biology major at Virginia Commonwealth University.  
In the summer of 2005  she worked with Dr. Jerry Farris. Berndatte studied the aquatic toxicity 
of caffeine, a non-regulated but common wastewater component.

Bernadette completed her BS in Biology at VCU in 2006 and is currently applying to 
graduate programs.

Eric Duncan is a junior biology major at the University of North Carolina - Pembroke.  
In the summer of  2005 he worked with Dr. Malathi Srivatsan. Eric studied the neuron 
level effect of malathion (an herbicide) on fish.

Jose Torres Mercado is a junior biology major at the University of Puerto Rico.  
In the summer of 2005 he worked with Dr. Al Romero.  The title of Jose's project was 
"Lost in Migration: Lack of correlation between geomagnetic anomalies and cetacean 
strandings in the Caribbean"

Nathan Hood is a sophomore biology major at the University of Texas - Austin.  
In the summer of 2005 he worked with  Dr. Tom Risch. Nathan studied the metal 
composition of bird eggs and the link between egg condition and metalloprotein content.

  Nicole Henderson is a senior Environmental Science major at Hampton University.  In Summer 2006 she worked with Dr. Hannigan.  The title of her research was "Distinguishing Between Anthropogenic and Biogenic Organics in Black Shale Draining Streams"

Hector Estrada is a junior Biology major at U. Puerto Rico Humcao.  In summer 2006 he worked with Dr. Bednarz.  The title of his research was "Is Bacillus licheniformis a factor influencing abnormal balding in Passerine birds in northeastern Arkansas?"

  Brett Williams is a senior Chemistry major at the University of Pittsburgh.  In Summer 2006 he worked with Dr. Malathi Srivatsan.  The title of his research was "Malathion in water resources and its effect on the brain cholinesterase of young (sexually immature) Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas)"

Leslie Tomic is a senior Geology major at SUNY-Cortland.  In summer 2006 she worked with Dr. Dowling.  The title of her research was "The effects of metals within poultry litter as an organic fertilizer on soils and Bermuda grass"

Jeanette Uwase is a sophomore Biotechnology major at Ivy Tech Community College. in summer 2006 she worked with Dr. Argelia Lorence.  The title of her research was "Vitamin C biosynthesis in mustard species".

Sarah Spulecki is a senior Chemistry major at Framingham State University. In summer 2006 she worked with Dr. Anne Grippo.  The title of her research was "Effects of Resveratrol and Resveratrol Derivatives Produced from Peanut Hairy Roots on HL60 Human Leukemia Cells".

Eric Freeburg is a senior chemistry major at Luther College. In summer 2006 he worked with Dr. Medina-Bolivar.  The title of his research was "Phytochemical profiling of black cohosh (Actaea racemosa), sheng ma (A. cimicifuga) and commercial products by HPTLC, HPTLC-MS and GC-MS"

Heather Young is a senior Chemistry major at Truman State University.  In summer 2006 she worked with Dr. McKay.  The title of her research was "The effects of poultry litter application on the metal body burden of ground-dwelling arthropods".

David Krauth is a sophomore Biology major at San Jose State University. In summer 2006 he worked with Dr. Bouldin.  The title of his research was "Field Usage of Polyacrylamide to Reduce Agricultural-Associated Contamination.
