RISE 2008**
June 2 - August 8

Welcome to RISE - Research Internships in Science of the Environment!

RISE is a National Science Foundation funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates site providing summer research experiences in Environmental Science to undergraduate science majors from across the United States.  Specifically RISE is designed to meet the education needs of under-represented minority students  with the primary goal of our program being to increase the diversity of the science workforce.  From recruitment, to mentoring, to follow-up, RISE is designed to  provide students, who do not have access to research opportunities, a research experience that will give them the tools of success they need to stay in the sciences and pursue advanced degrees in their chosen fields.

Each summer RISE brings together students for a 10-week summer research experience centered on exploring the relationships between agricultural land-use and  ecosystem function. Students work as members of a research team studying complex cross-disciplinary environmental issues.  Students gain both laboratory and field skills and gain practical experience in working across disciplines.

ELIGIBILITY:  To be considered for the program you must have completed at least one course sequence in biology, chemistry, or geology (completed freshman year), have a minimum major GPA of 2.5, and be a US citizen or permanent resident.  In your application essay you must clearly describe your interest in environmental science and how RISE can assist you in reaching your career goals.

BENEFITS:  All students receive a stipend of $4,000 for the summer.  Housing is provided by the University in graduate student apartment complexes (2 or 4 bedroom).  Travel to and from the site is also provided by the program.  In addition all students will present their summer research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Education meeting the spring following RISE.

ACTIVITIES:  In addition to high quality hands-on environmental research students participate in seminars centered on issues of controversial environmental issues, science ethics, environmental history, environmental justice, and professional development seminars including how to apply to graduate school, industry and government research careers, and more.

**The participants for the RISE REU 2008 Cohort have been selected.  Even though the applications were excellent, there were over 100 applications and only 10 slots available.  If you were not selected and are not graduating by May 2009, please reapply for the RISE REU 2009 Cohort.
